The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is a partnership between Imperial College London and The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). We bring together researchers across these institutions from different disciplines to develop innovative ways to address challenges in cancer research and improve patient outcomes.

  • Cutting costs, boosting confidence: Novel force-based assay enhances selection of better immune cells for cancer immunotherapies

Cancer immunotherapies are a type of treatment that activate the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells. This type of treatment has significantly improved patient outcomes in recent years for a variety of different cancer types however, they can be difficult and expensive to make. A team led by Dr Sam Au at Imperial have created a technology and launched a company, Avigen, to help accelerate the development of immunotherapies by assessing the binding strength of potential immunotherapy cells and identifying which ones are more likely to succeed.
  • Machine learning to predict immunotherapy treatment outcomes in liver cancer

New research looking into machine learning models that could be used to predict treatment outcomes when using immunotherapy to treat liver cancer. This research was led by a research team at Imperial involving a Clinical Research Fellow from the CRUK Convergence Science Centre. The research was recently published in the Journal of Hepatology.
  • Science in Medicine School Prize

The Science in Medicine School Teams Prize 2025 is a competition for sixth form students in science in medicine. The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is supporting one of the contests, asking students to develop an idea using science or technology to make the patient experience of cancer treatment more supportive or comforting. Students will have the opportunity to explore the science behind current cancer treatments and use their creativity to come up with novel ideas in true convergence style!
